A Brief Survey

Beijing Stomatological Hospital, Capital Medical University, was established in 1945. It is rated among the top level (3A) specialized hospitals at the national level with its integration of medical treatment, teaching and research. It has two fully equipped divisions, one situated in the commercial center Wangfujing and the other to the south of the Temple of Heaven, an ancient park in Beijing, which gives this division a beautiful surrounding.

We believe in “invigorating hospital through science and education” and stick to the working style of “strictness, accuracy, diligence and cautiousness”. With the accelerating rate of development, the hospital has recruited a great number of experts in medical treatment and research, and the comprehensive competence of the hospital has been thus enhanced. With a higher level of clinical and research capability, we can now offer better and more varied medical services.

The hospital occupies an area of 23,000 square meters, building area totaled to 27,375 square meters, and receives 1,800 outpatients on daily average. There are altogether 17 clinical departments (including Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Orthodontics, Department of Prosthodontics, Department of Endodontics, Department of Periodontics & Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, Department of VIP Dental Service, Department of Preventive Dentistry, Department of General Dentistry, Dental Emergency, VIP Medical Treatment Center, Department of Geriatric Dentistry, etc.) and 6 technical departments (namely Pharmacy, Radiology, Department of Laboratory Test, Department of Oral Pathology, Dental Laboratory and Department of Medical Equipment). To lay special emphasis on the specialty of this hospital and give its forte to full play, we have also established advanced clinical centers, like Oral and Maxillofacial Consultation Center, Center for Salivary Disease, Consultation Center of Orthodontics and Oral Implantation Center, to examine and treat those difficult and complicated oral cases.

The hospital has imported 277 sophisticated dental units and many other medical facilities from Germany, Japan, Finland and some other countries to meet various needs. There are also 80 beds in our wards for surgery purposes.

There are altogether 667 employees in this hospital, of whom 489 are medical workers. 25 of them are either M.S. or Ph.D. supervisors, 28 professors or associate professors, 89 chief or associate chief physicians, and 171 physicians of middle rank. 3 of our experts have been recognized as of outstanding contribution; 8 enjoy government subsidy; 1 receives the national funding for outstanding young scientists; 2 have been chosen for the cross-century talents project, and 6 for Beijing medical talents project; 3 are awarded the title of Beijing Outstanding Young Intellectual, and 9 Beijing New Star in Science and Technology.

Under the guidance of the motto of “Great Virtue, Erudite Knowledge”, Beijing Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Capital Medical University has developed in a time span of two decades into one of scale with teaching and research capability. Oral clinical medicine has been established as a key discipline of study of the Beijing city, orthodontics as a key discipline of the public health system of Beijing. The School of Stomatology is identified as a national training site for oral medical personnel, a training site for clinical physicians for the Ministry of Education, and a qualified teaching site for clinical medicine. The school is also a unit having the right to grant master’s degrees first and then doctorates, making its medical teaching cover the whole range of oral medicine education and enlisting itself as a member of national textbook compilation committee for Orthodontics, Preventive Dentistry, Oral Biology, Oral and Maxillofacial Image Study, Oral Medicine, etc. The School assumes the responsibility of cultivating oral medical personnel from the intermediate level to the doctoral level. In 2002, it was assessed as a national training site for life science and technology.

Beijing Instituteof Dental Research has been actively introducing and cultivating high level researchers, and has made great achievements in oral medicine. Its Laboratory for Gene Therapy and Molecularbiology, Laboratory of Oral Microbiology and Laboratory for Caries and Experimental Pathology are conducting many a national research projects, such as 863 National Key Project, National Funding Project for Outstanding Young Scientists, National Funding Project for Natural Science. Meanwhile, it also cooperates with National Institutes of Health of the U.S.A (NIH) and universities and research institutes from France, Japan and some other countries. Since 1990, it has been awarded more than 50 awards of different kinds and levels (national, municipal and institutional). Its annual publications are more than 90, appearing in all kinds of academic periodicals and magazines.

The hospital ranks high in orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral medicine, etc. With the development of the hospital, its investment in research is on the increase year by year. As a result, the research conditions have been improved. Ever since 2000, the hospital has conducted 62 research projects of the nation, the Ministry of Public Health, Beijing municipality, Beijing Public Health Bureau and Capital Medical University.

Beijing Stomatological Association, Beijing Dental Disease Prevention Institute and Beijing Oral Workers Association are all affiliated to Beijing Stomatological Hospital. They, as a whole, have contributed to the development of oral medicine and dental disease prevention in Beijing.
